Dive insurance: what it covers and why you need it
Dive accident insurance can cover costs ordinary travel insurance may exclude, subject to policy terms: hyperbaric chamber treatment, specialist hospital care and emergency evacuation after a diving injury. DAN membership and dive accident insurance are distinct; benefits and purchase arrangements vary by DAN region and plan. Check your policy before you travel, especially for liveaboard trips far offshore.

Why isn't normal travel insurance always enough?
Many travel policies exclude scuba diving or limit the depth they cover. A diving injury can need a hyperbaric chamber and medical evacuation, which are expensive. Read the policy's diving section, or buy dive-specific cover.
What does dive accident insurance typically cover?
- Emergency medical treatment for diving injuries, including hyperbaric therapy.
- Hospital stays.
- Emergency evacuation, including air ambulance.
- Some plans: death or permanent disability benefits.
Is DAN membership the same as insurance?
No. DAN America sells membership and dive accident insurance separately; membership alone does not cover chamber treatment. DAN Europe includes membership when you buy an insurance plan. Check the actual policy rather than assuming membership guarantees medical cover. Terms differ between DAN regions (DAN Europe, DAN America and others) — check your region's current plans.
Do you need it for a day trip?
We strongly recommend it for any diving, and especially for liveaboards, where help is hours away. Our boats carry oxygen, and our team includes five instructors with DAN insurance and active CDWS status. Instructor insurance does not establish guest medical cover; check your own policy for treatment and evacuation benefits.
