Drift diving: how to enjoy the current safely
On a drift dive you let the current carry you along the reef while the boat follows. The keys are good buoyancy, staying with your group — don't swim against the current or race ahead with it — and carrying a delayed surface marker buoy (DSMB). PADI advises that the dive leader uses a marker buoy and everyone else carries a DSMB to deploy if separated.

Why carry a DSMB?
If you get separated, you can send it up so the boat can see where you'll surface — especially important where currents carry you away from the group.
How should I move in the current?
Don't swim against it — it will exhaust you. Don't swim with it either, or you may get separated. Relax, stay with your guide and use your buoyancy.
What if I get separated?
Agree the plan in the briefing. Typically you look for your buddy briefly, then make a safe ascent, deploy your DSMB and wait for the boat.
Who should drift dive?
PADI advises mastering buoyancy control first. A Drift Diver specialty adds the techniques.
