The pre-dive buddy check (BWRAF): why you should never skip it
BWRAF is the pre-dive buddy check: BCD, Weights, Releases, Air and Final check. It takes a minute and catches the classic mistakes — air not fully turned on, weights forgotten, a leaking O-ring — and shows you where your buddy's alternate air source and releases are before you might need them. PADI's advice is simple: never skip it, however experienced you are.

What does BWRAF stand for?
- B — BCD: inflates and deflates.
- W — Weights: you have them, and they're secure.
- R — Releases: you know where your buddy's buckles and releases are.
- A — Air: tank open, gauge reading full, both regulators breathing.
- F — Final check: mask, fins, computer — everything ready.
Why does it matter?
PADI's blog describes divers entering without a mask or fins, or with their air still off; forgotten weights or computers on busy days; and leaking O-rings caught before the dive. Knowing your buddy's set-up also speeds up any air-sharing emergency.
Frequently asked questions
I'm experienced — do I still need it?
Yes. Complacency is exactly what the check guards against.
Does my guide do it for me?
Guides make mistakes too — check your own air and your buddy's.
