Semi-submarine, glass-bottom boat or snorkeling: seeing Hurghada's reefs without diving
A semi-submarine is a surface boat with an underwater viewing cabin: you watch the reef through windows while staying dry. A glass-bottom boat has a transparent section in its hull. Both offer a dry view for people who do not swim. Snorkeling puts you in the water with the marine life, but suitability depends on your swimming ability, health, sea conditions and the supervision available.

What is a semi-submarine, and does it go underwater?
A semi-submarine stays on the surface; its observation cabin sits below the waterline. Egypt Sunmarine describes Royal Seascope as a semi-submarine with an underwater glassed cabin and advertises an observation deck about 3 m below sea level. Cabin depth, stairs, access to the deck and trip length depend on the vessel: confirm them with the operator.
What is a glass-bottom boat?
A glass-bottom boat has a transparent section below the waterline, so you look down at the reef from inside the boat. You stay dry, and the view is clearer than looking over the side, because you are not looking through the moving water surface. Wikivoyage's Hurghada guide lists glass-bottom boat trips among things to do.
Is there a real submarine in Hurghada?
Sindbad operated real tourist submarines in Hurghada. One sank on 27 March 2025; contemporary reporting recorded six Russian tourists killed. The operator's website still advertises dives to 25 m and displays a booking link, but that page does not establish a current sailing schedule or official authorisation to resume. We could not verify current operating status from a dated operator or authority announcement. Confirm the exact vessel and its current operating status directly before booking.
Semi-submarine, glass-bottom boat or snorkeling: which shows you more?
| Semi-submarine | Glass-bottom boat | Snorkeling | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Do you get wet? | No | No | Yes |
| How you see the reef | Through side windows, a few metres down | Through a window in the hull | In the water, face down at the surface |
| Need to swim? | No | No | You should be comfortable in the water |
| Best for | Non-swimmers, small children, older travellers | A short, dry look at the reef | Seeing fish and coral up close |
Snorkeling puts you in the water with the fish, so you see much more than through a window. If you are not a strong swimmer, read best snorkeling in Hurghada, which covers beginners and non-swimmers, and snorkeling safety tips for first-timers.
What do we offer if you don't dive?
Our snorkeling trip stops twice on the reefs of Giftun and Abu Ramada, with mask, fins and lunch included; no experience is needed, only being comfortable in the water. The Orange Bay trip adds beach time on Giftun island. If you want to go one step further, a try dive with an instructor needs no certification. We don't run semi-submarine or glass-bottom boat trips ourselves.
Frequently asked questions
Does a semi-submarine go underwater?
The boat stays on the surface while its viewing cabin is below the waterline. Access between the cabin and deck depends on the vessel and crew instructions.
How deep is the window on a Hurghada semi-submarine?
It depends on the vessel. Royal Seascope's operator advertises an observation deck about 3 m below sea level; ask the operator for the specification of your boat.
Is the Sindbad submarine in Hurghada still running?
We could not verify current operation. One Sindbad submarine sank on 27 March 2025. The operator's website still advertises submarine trips, but we found no dated announcement confirming a current schedule or authorisation to resume. Check directly with the operator.
Can non-swimmers see the reef in Hurghada?
Yes: a semi-submarine or glass-bottom boat keeps you dry. Many people who are not strong swimmers also snorkel with a flotation vest close to the boat; tell the crew before you get in.
