Which wetsuit do you need in the Red Sea? A month-by-month guide
Most divers in Hurghada are comfortable in a 3 mm suit in high summer, when the sea averages about 28–29 °C, and in a 5 mm suit for most of the year. From December to April, when it drops to about 22–24 °C, many add a hood or switch to 7 mm. Cold builds up over several dives a day, so choose warmer rather than cooler.

What wetsuit thickness goes with which water temperature?
- About 28–29 °C (July–September): 3 mm full suit; some divers manage with a shorty.
- About 25–27 °C (May–June, October–November): 3 mm or 5 mm, depending on how easily you feel the cold.
- About 22–24 °C (December–April): 5 mm, often with a hood or vest, or 7 mm.
Temperatures are long-term averages for Hurghada from seatemperature.info. These are guidelines, not rules — two people on the same boat can need very different suits.
Why do divers get cold even in warm water?
Water draws heat from the body much faster than air, and the loss adds up over a long dive and a second dive later in the day. DAN's guidance on staying warm explains how chilling builds up and why it matters for comfort and safety — so dress for the coldest part of the day.
Does my wetsuit lose warmth at depth?
Yes. Neoprene is foam with gas bubbles in it, and it compresses as the pressure rises, so a suit is thinner — and less warm — at 25 m than at the surface. Another reason to err on the warm side for deeper dives.
Can I rent a wetsuit for my dives with you?
Yes. On our Daily Diving days a full equipment set, wetsuit included, is €10 a day; tell us your height and weight when you book and which thickness you'd like.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 3 mm wetsuit enough for the Red Sea?
In high summer (about 28–29 °C) it usually is. For the rest of the year most divers prefer 5 mm.
Do I need a hood in Hurghada?
In winter, when the sea is about 22–24 °C, many divers add a hood or a vest under their 5 mm suit.
Should snorkelers wear a wetsuit?
It's optional; a shorty or a rash vest also protects against the sun on long snorkel stops.
