Sidemount vs backmount: what's the difference?
Backmount is the standard set-up: one cylinder on your back. Sidemount carries cylinders at your sides under your arms. SDI describes sidemount's benefits: a more streamlined profile, carrying more gas, true redundancy with a separate regulator on each cylinder, and comfort for divers with back or shoulder problems because the weight isn't on the spine. It needs a proper course.

Why do divers choose sidemount?
- More streamlined than single-tank backmount.
- Can carry more gas while staying streamlined.
- Each cylinder has its own regulator — true redundancy if one fails.
- More comfortable for some divers with back or shoulder problems.
Is sidemount only for technical divers?
No — SDI argues it's useful for recreational divers too, and recommends a proper sidemount course with a qualified instructor covering fitting, buoyancy, trim, propulsion and problem-solving.
