SSI Extended Range explained: Foundations, XR Nitrox, Trimix and beyond

SSI Extended Range (XR) covers technical diving training. Foundations develops skills in pool or confined water to a maximum of 12 m. Extended Range Nitrox Diving permits limited decompression to 40 m; Extended Range reaches 45 m, with a trimix option. Technical Extended Range reaches 50 m, or 60 m with trimix. Hypoxic Trimix has 80 m and 100 m certification options. Entry requirements and equipment vary by programme.

What are the SSI Extended Range levels?

LevelPrerequisites (SSI)Maximum depthWhat it adds
XR FoundationsOpen Water Diver, 24 logged dives; configuration-specific certification where required12 m in pool/confined waterBuoyancy, trim, propulsion and teamwork; recommended 16 hours
Extended Range Nitrox DivingDeep Diving, Enriched Air Nitrox 40, 24 logged dives; Sidemount Diving if using sidemount40 mUp to 15 minutes accumulated decompression; decompression gas up to 100% oxygen; at least 4 open-water training dives
Extended Range / Extended Range TrimixDeep Diving, Enriched Air Nitrox 40, 50 logged dives; Sidemount Diving if using sidemount45 mUp to 25 minutes accumulated decompression; at least 6 open-water training dives; trimix is a distinct option
Technical Extended Range / Trimix70 logged dives, including 20 deeper than 30 m and 10 staged-decompression dives with a gas switch (excluding training dives); Extended Range, Full Cave Diving or Technical Wreck Diving certification, or equivalent50 m; 60 m with trimixTwo-gas-switch decompression diving; training dive decompression limits still apply
Hypoxic TrimixTechnical Extended Range or equivalent; 100 logged dives, including 30 deeper than 30 m, 10 deeper than 45 m and 20 staged-decompression dives with at least two gas switches (excluding training dives)80 m or 100 m, according to the certification completedTwinset and at least three stage cylinders for travel and decompression gases

Minimum ages: 16 for Foundations; 18 for the other programmes in this table. This is a summary: your instructor checks the full current standards, medical requirements and equipment before enrolment.

Where should you start?

XR Foundations is a useful skills workshop, rather than a compulsory first step for every XR course. Its pool/confined-water sessions have a maximum depth of 12 m. You work on trim, buoyancy, propulsion and team procedures in technical equipment before any decompression diving. Before the next step you also need Deep Diving and Enriched Air Nitrox 40: see our articles on the Deep Diver course and the nitrox course.

Sidemount or twinset?

Extended Range Nitrox Diving, Extended Range and Technical Extended Range use a twinset or an Extended Range sidemount system; a sidemount prerequisite applies when you use that configuration. Foundations allows several equipment configurations, including a single cylinder and appropriately qualified rebreather configurations. Hypoxic Trimix specifies a twinset with at least three stage cylinders. Our article sidemount vs backmount compares the two open-circuit options.

How does SSI XR compare with TDI and PADI TecRec?

All three lead from limited decompression to full trimix diving, with different course names and steps. If you already hold a card from one agency, the best next step is usually to continue with that agency. Our guide to the technical diving path from Tec 40 to trimix explains the steps, and the technical diving hub lists every tec course we run.

Why train for technical diving in the Red Sea?

Warm water, good visibility and deep walls and wrecks close to shore make the Red Sea a popular place to train. We also run technical diving day trips on the same boat as our daily diving. Narcosis, gas planning and decompression all become central at these depths, so take each step at its own pace.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need for SSI XR Foundations?

Open Water Diver certification, at least 24 logged dives and a minimum age of 16. Additional certification requirements depend on the equipment configuration used.

How deep can I go with SSI Extended Range Nitrox?

40 m, with a maximum accumulated decompression time of 15 minutes, using decompression gases up to 100% oxygen in the prescribed equipment configuration.

How deep is SSI XR Trimix?

Extended Range Trimix reaches 45 m. Technical Extended Range reaches 50 m, or 60 m with the trimix qualification. Hypoxic Trimix certification is issued for 80 m or 100 m, depending on the training completed.

Is XR Foundations done in the sea?

SSI specifies pool or confined-water sessions, with a maximum depth of 12 m. Confirm the actual training site with your instructor.
