Seasickness on dive boats: prevention and medication

Sit where the boat moves least — usually the middle, low down — and keep your eyes on the horizon. Rest, eat and drink well before the trip. Divers Alert Network warns that the common seasickness pills (antihistamines) cause drowsiness that can seriously impair a diver, so read the side effects and talk to a doctor before diving on them.

Where should I sit on the boat?

DAN's advice is to find the part of the vessel with the least up-and-down movement and stay there — usually the centre — staying low with your eyes on the horizon.

What can I do before the trip?

Rest, eat and hydrate well beforehand. Ginger and wrist pressure bands are popular remedies, though DAN notes some have not been tested in trials.

Can I take seasickness pills before diving?

Over-the-counter antihistamines are the most common choice, and drowsiness is their typical side effect — DAN warns it might seriously impair a diver's ability to perform safely. Prescription promethazine causes prominent drowsiness, made worse by alcohol. Many divers use the scopolamine patch with few problems, but its listed side effects include confusion and disorientation. Read the leaflet, ask a doctor before diving on any of them, and try a new medicine on land first.

Is seasickness a reason to skip the dive?

Vomiting and dehydration are not a good start to a dive. If you feel very unwell, sit the dive out — DAN lists seasickness among the causes of dehydration in divers.

Frequently asked questions

Is the boat to the reefs from Hurghada rough?

It depends on the wind and the site. Tell us if you're prone to seasickness — we can suggest sheltered sites and the best place to sit.

Can I take a seasickness tablet and still dive?

Possibly, but check with a doctor first: the drowsiness these medicines cause can be dangerous underwater.
