Alcohol, hydration and diving: what the research says

Keep alcohol and diving apart. A study cited by Divers Alert Network found divers' skills were significantly compromised at a blood alcohol level of 0.04% — about two beers in an hour on an empty stomach for a 180-pound man. Alcohol also dehydrates you, and dehydration is a potential risk factor for decompression sickness. It can deepen nitrogen narcosis, too.

How does alcohol affect divers?

In the study DAN cites (Perrine et al.), the ability to perform scuba skills was significantly compromised at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.04%. DAN notes that situational awareness and protective inhibitions may drop even at lower levels.

Why does dehydration matter?

DAN lists recent alcohol, seasickness, traveller's diarrhoea, heavy sweating, diuretic medicines and air travel as causes of dehydration in divers. Dehydration, especially when severe, is a potential risk factor for decompression sickness — and its symptoms, like fatigue, can be confused with DCS.

Does alcohol make nitrogen narcosis worse?

DAN says alcohol may enhance the effects of narcosis. Together, alcohol, dehydration and narcosis can reduce problem-solving ability underwater — exactly when you need it.

How much should I drink (water)?

Drink regularly on the boat, especially in the Egyptian summer. DAN notes good hydration may help prevent cramps and fatigue, but over-drinking is not the goal — DAN also warns that hyperhydration can contribute to immersion pulmonary oedema.

Frequently asked questions

How long after drinking can I dive?

DAN gives no fixed number — alcohol takes time to wear off. The safe choice is no alcohol before diving and none between dives.

Can I have a beer after the last dive?

DAN's advice is to think twice before combining alcohol and diving; if you drink, keep it to after your diving day and keep hydrating.
